The first time I fell in love with the Caribbean was back in 1993 when my husband and I  spent our honeymoon in Nassau, Bahamas.  That was before the Atlantis Resort took over the island and built their mega resort.  We stayed in a small mom and pop bungalow called Paradise Paradise right on the beach. I was so afraid to fly but I remember how excited I was to take  my first romantic vacation with my new husband..I held onto my husband’s shirt tightly for the entire flight. When we hit turbulence I was thinking, Lord this plane is going down and we’re all gonna die.  My mood changed fast when the flight attendant announced we were landing in the Bahamas.

As we departed I heard calypso music in the background and it made everything around me feel magical.  I can still smell the salt water in the air just thinking about it. I was amazed by the turquoise color of the Caribbean sea.  It seems as if everything is blue in the Bahamas.  When we arrived at the resort we were greeted with a refreshing Bahama Mama cocktail and “welcome home”  from the staff.   As soon as I opened the door to the little bungalow my mouth dropped at the site of the breathtaking ocean views.

My husband and I dropped our bags and took in the scenery.  That’s when I knew I was in love with the Caribbean.  This was even before I tasted the delicious authentic cuisine, the fresh exotic fruit, or even had a chance to meet any of the locals.

We spent our days soaking up everything the island had to offer. We swam with the dolphins, rented motor bikes, and toured the island.  We shopped the small boutiques and stopped at a small road side restaurant and had the island specialty, and my favorite dish, fresh conch salad. Our nights were spent sipping on exotic drinks and dancing under the stars.

My new husband and I were on cloud nine.  We were in love and we were in the Caribbean!

The Bahamas have grown so much since 1993. Now there are several romantic resorts, big hotel chains, and condos to choose from but there’s nothing like the nostalgia I feel when I look back on my very first visit to the beautiful island with the love of my life.
